Kanban for your alerts?

The board layout is right. The physics are wrong.

Put alert state on a board, a column for everything inbound, everything being worked, everything waiting on someone else, an owner on every card. That is the kanban insight, and it fits the NOC, where the job is quick decisions and correlation. The metaphor breaks in one place, nobody pulls alert cards onto a board. They arrive on their own, and the win is an empty board, not a full pipeline.

The questions a NOC asks all shift are questions about state, what just arrived, what is being worked, who has it, what is waiting on somebody else. In the fractured-inbox world those questions have no surface that answers them, the state of the operation lives in whoever has been in the chair longest.

Kanban assumes things an alert stream refuses to do. Work is pulled by humans at a sustainable pace, alerts arrive on their own, hundreds an hour on a bad night. Cards move left to right by hand, alert states change with nobody touching them, a condition clears itself, a burst grows, a repeat folds into its event. And on a kanban board, a full pipeline is health. On an alert board, the goal is emptiness.

So the board an ops room actually needs looks like kanban for about ten seconds, then behaves like something else, live and self-updating, grouping the same condition into one card instead of five, sorted by what needs a human rather than what arrived last. The layout of a board. The physics of a console.
